Laguna Beach and the Hills question?

I'm watching the hills on mtv...I never watched laguna beach but I guess this is one of the characters...anyway, I have a question. Is this a reality show, or just a show staged to look like a reality show? Because the camera angles they get dont look like reality show but it seems real.
