What is needed for a soldier to plead Reason of Insanity in a court case?

Having been to IRAQ before and been mortared a few times and losing a close conrad, What proof do psychiatric Doctors need to show the courts that a soldier was not in his right state of mind during the crime that was committed? How what would the Psychiatric Doctors look at?
