My mom always tells me to hit my kids. Should I listen to her?

I have a 3 year old a almost 2 year old and a 6 month old. When my 2 oldest ones misbehave she tells me to hit them like to them or slap their hand. I don't believe in hitting I don't think it works. I would feel bad to hit them. I have taken many parenting cles and I've read and know that hitting is not right. My mom says if I hit them they will know not to misbehave again but I told her I will just give them time out or something like that but she said they wont understand but they also wont understand if I hit them too! So I think she nuts right?lol I do live with her so she takes a part in raising my kids. How should I discipline my children without my mother intervening?
